Currently 1.3 million people are without homes as a result of the earthquake. Finding adaptive ways of solving this problem is crucial.
In collaboration with partner groups GRU offers working examples of alternative building technologies. Expanding the use of sustainable building practices is helping those that need shelter and aids in the development of a Haitian renewable resource industry.
By greatly reducing the need for imported construction materials and promoting alternative uses for Haitian natural resources, reconstruction efforts in Haiti have the opportunity to bring new sustainable building techniques into the country.
Used both as temporary dwellings or more permanent installations domes remain the most flexible of large structural types. They offer maximum space and structural strength in relation to the labor and materials needed.
Working with Pacific Domes GRU are the only certified dome builders residing in Haiti. Utilizing local labor and maximizing the distribution of jobs to the community are key components to our dome program.
We are also developing domes using local resources such as bamboo and palm frond. This leads to local innovation and inexpensive community use.
